Happy Birthday To You

Happy Birthday to WHO?

Taurus

(April 20 – May 19)

Being lazy comes as second nature to our “Taureans”, give them good food and a warm blanket, and they are all set.  They are especially good with children and show a strong loyalty to their master.  He looks after his “stuff” very well, including people, and can be very protective of his charges, and his space.

SALLY (VENNING)

….. Sally turned 12 today (May 4th) and what a cool little dog she turned out to be!

Sally’s grown up to know what she wants and takes opportunities to do just that as they come her way.  She’s the reason I have to be careful about leaving a gate open.  Sally has always been curious about what’s around the next bend in the road and given the chance, she’ll wander away.  She’ll stroll up the driveway, taking time to smell the flowers and check out interesting sounds and smells along the way.  She never runs away … she ambles, quietly drinking in the world around her.

A perfect companion and exceptional housedog, she’s the easiest keeper of my bunch.  She loves to sit in a lap and be petted, or lie on a rug in the sunshine and be warmed.  She’s my “simple-pleasures dog”.  Each day’s sole goal is to enjoy stuff, no matter how small or how far away.  Sally hears her own little drummer and is content to take things as they come.  There’s something very “Buddhist-like” about Sally.

Her idea of being a performance dog is always to be first in line when the food bowls go down.  At those moments she shows such surprising speed and agility I have to rethink who was training who when we started down that road to competitive agility so many years ago.  I expected Sally to bring us superstar agility status.  HA!  Sally showed me it has nothing at all to do with winning or losing or playing by the rules.  According to this little dog, you make up your own rules and enjoy stuff the way YOU want to enjoy it.

The world according to Sally is take each day as it comes, do whatever you want, don’t worry about what other people think, in a word, “enjoy” life.  She’s the epitome of that old saying that goes something like this:  “You can go through life kicking and screaming or laughing and dancing … it’s your choice.”

Happy Birthday Sally!

COOPER (PRICE)

Cooper was my first herding dog, and at 10 years old he still has a lot to show me.  Although he is a little slower now (not that he would ever be classed as ”fast”), and can no longer run like he used to, he still still loves to work his ducks, and will be doing that for as long as he wants to.  Who’d have thought this rescue dog would have opened up the herding world for me. He’s a true “Taurus” …  Thanks Coop, and Happy birthday.
